PROSTHODONTICS

PROSTHODONTICS

Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that aims to the oral rehabilitation through the replacement of lost teeth, from a laboratory environment, with prostheses confection.

Front Tooth Prosthesis

What type of dental prostheses are there?

Partial Prosthesis:
Fixed: Single-unit crowns (metal, metal-ceramics, ceramics, porcelain or polymeric materials); Dental Bridges; Unit implants.
Removable: Acrylic; Skeletal (metal).

Total Prosthesis:
Fixed: On implants.
Removable: Acrylic (dentures).

What is the function of prostheses?

For the masticatory system properly function, the teeth need to be in balance in the upper and lower dental arches. The loss of a single tooth unbalances this system of forces and, the neighboring teeth move, migrating to the toothless space in order to compensate this loss.

Also the antagonist tooth (from the opposite arch) tends to extrude. Therefore, with the empty spaces created by tooth loss, the gaps happen and the chewing and the aesthetics change.
So, for a correct harmony of the masticatory system, it’s essential relocate the teeth through prostheses.
